3 Reasons Why Your Facebook Ads Aren't Working

3 Reasons Why Your Facebook Ads Aren't Working

Are you stuck wondering why your Facebook Ads aren't working to attract you leads or sales for your online business?

Taking the time to design a Facebook Ads Campaign that aligns with your business goals is key when it comes to marketing your business online.

Once you’ve caught your ideal audience's eye and you’re on their radar, you’ve achieved the first step towards building a relationship with them and guiding them towards your paid for offers.

But what if your Facebook Ads aren't working? You aren't getting any sign ups to your email list, or any sales from your products? It’s likely that you’ve missed out a few not-so-obvious, yet crucial elements to the set up of your campaign. Don’t worry though, these Facebook ads mistakes are easily fixed so let's find out how to create an advertising campaign that works!

1. Ideal Client Targeting Basics

Understanding the basics of who your ideal client is, is essential for attracting them. This is also essential for Facebook ads targeting interests which can make or break your advertising campaigns. Think about who your ideal client is:

  • Who are they?

  • Where do they live?

  • What’s their occupation?

  • What is their family situation?

  • Do they have pets?

  • What struggles do they face? List the things that keep them awake at night.

  • What brands do they follow or buy from?

  • What magazines do they read?

  • What and who do they like on television?

  • Where do they do their food shopping?

At first glance you might think that the questions above are irrelevant, but they are building a picture of who you are talking to. For Facebook and Instagram ads, this is how you drill down in your targeting interests to find your ideal client.

Knowing your clients at this level paints a true picture of who they are. This knowledge allows you to make a strong connection with them. In your messaging you’ll be able to make it clear that you understand them and what they’re going through. Plus you can pitch the right offer to them. This will stop them from scrolling past you in their feeds.

There's no point talking to a busy mum about a course that starts at 4pm every day because she’ll have her children home from school at that time.

2. The Wrong Facebook Ads Objective.

This is a common Facebook Ads mistake. Did you know that when you boost a post directly from your Facebook page or Instagram profile, you are actually creating a ad with an Engagement objective? All you are doing is instructing Facebook to get more likes, comments and shares.

Your posts may look popular, but you’re unlikely to get leads or sales from them. You haven't asked Facebook to get more website visitors, or conversions from the ad, just engagement.

Instead of clicking the boost button from your page, consider these elements to create an ad through Facebook Ads Manager instead.

  • What is the goal of your ad? Leads, sales or likes?

  • What is the next step that you want the customer to take once they see your ad? Click through to your website, buy something, add their email address, complete a form, watch your video?

  • Now choose the campaign objective that matches the ad’s purpose.

Remember that if you want to send your audience to your website, that you’ve added your Facebook pixel and events to the landing page to track their visit.

3. Your Facebook Ad Messaging is Not Attention Grabbing.

You could be a talented writer, but if you don’t know who you are writing for and why, then it’s impossible to grab anyone’s attention. If you’re getting a low Click Through Rate (link click through) on your ads, this points towards your ad creative (both your copy and your design) not quite hitting the mark with your audience (it could also be your targeting again though).

Here are my easy fixes for this:

  • Head back to point one again and do your ideal client research!

  • Do A LOT of research.

  • Go deeper into how you can solve their problems and make their lives better, or happier. What are they aspiring to in their life?

  • Is your messaging in sync with where they are on their customer journey? For this element, you need to think about the customer journey carefully. Firstly for the ‘pain aware’ step you want to empathise with their struggles, then explain how you can help.

  • Speak in their language. Research the way your audience talks e.g. when they comment on your posts. Echo how they write/talk. This is a great technique to resonate with them.
